ADHD Awareness: It’s More Than Being “Lazy” or “Disorganized”

If you live with ADHD, you may have heard comments such as, “You need to try harder,” “You are too distracted,” or “Why can you not just get organized?” Over time, these messages can become part of how you see yourself.

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is not laziness, a lack of intelligence, or a character flaw. ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition that can affect attention, organization, impulse control, emotional regulation, and executive functioning. Understanding this difference can help replace years of frustration and self-criticism with greater self-awareness.

What ADHD Can Look Like in Everyday Life

ADHD presents differently from person to person. You may struggle with:

  • Starting or completing tasks
  • Managing time and responsibilities
  • Forgetfulness and disorganization
  • Distractibility or mental restlessness
  • Emotional reactivity
  • Feeling overwhelmed by multi-step tasks

When these experiences happen repeatedly, it is easy to develop thoughts such as, “I am lazy,” “I should be better at this,” or “Something is wrong with me.”

In therapy, we can challenge those conclusions.

Changing the Story You Tell Yourself About ADHD

From a narrative therapy perspective, ADHD is something you experience. It does not define who you are. Together, we can explore how criticism, expectations, and past experiences may have shaped the story you have developed about yourself.

Using CBT, we can identify unhelpful thought patterns and develop more realistic ways of responding to frustration, procrastination, and self-doubt. Mindfulness can help you notice distraction and emotional reactions without immediately judging yourself.

We can also identify strengths that may have been overshadowed by years of focusing on what feels difficult. Creativity, curiosity, persistence, enthusiasm, adaptability, and the ability to become deeply engaged in meaningful interests can all become resources for change.

How I Approach ADHD Therapy

When I work with you around ADHD, my goal is not to make you fit someone else’s definition of how you should function. I help you better understand how your mind works and develop practical strategies that work for you.

Our work may include strengthening executive functioning, creating sustainable routines, improving emotional regulation, challenging negative self-talk, practicing mindfulness, and recognizing strengths you may have overlooked.

ADHD may influence your experiences, but it does not have to determine your identity or your future.

If ADHD affects your work, relationships, confidence, or daily life, I can help you develop a more compassionate understanding of yourself while building practical strategies for meaningful, sustainable change.
